Fall window artwork

This is our on going project for fall.  We printed, colored and cut every leaf individually.  We drew the clouds freehand.

A co-worker found the scarecrow at the dollar store. She also made the tree and fence out of paper.

I found the idea for the owls on Pinterest.  They are simply made out of toilet paper rolls.

Everyone did such a great job, I am so proud!

Ziplock butterflies

Celebrating spring in our room.  They used noodles, beads and whatever else they could get their hands on.  They're a great addition to our room!

Slick shoes

Another fine example of why you shouldn't care what others think.  This guy, let's call him John, loves Elvis.  He came in today wearing new "blue suede shoes" and pink Elvis socks. Not only was I impressed by his awesome fashion but by the fact that he actually found blue suede shoes to buy! Keep rocking the flair, big guy.

Fashionistas

So many of us are constantly worried about how we look, what's fashionable and what other people think about us.

One of the best parts of my job is my consumer's fashion statements. One guy wears hot pink running shoes and thinks they're amazing and I get such a kick outta it. They are given the freedom to dress themselves and some times the outfits are...quite interesting.  This is a picture of a consumer wearing sweatpants, black socks and dress shoes. He was so proud of his outfit it melted my heart.

This is just another reason why I love my consumers

My new self portrait

One of my consumers brought in a Magnadoodle. I posed amd asked her to draw me.  It only took her 2 minutes.  Now that's talent!

Shaving Cream Expressions

We used shaving cream today to express ourselves!  We poured a little infront of each person and let them express themselves however they wanted.  They were able to laugh with each other and erase easily if they made a mistake.  We also discovered that it's easy to clean up off of clothes, carpet, faces and ears.  Have fun and just use a wet towel to clean up when you're done.  A squigi also works well.

Sanity Savers

I'm sure you saw the picture of Doris.  She helps answer the phones and takes messages.
Okay, obviously that doesn't really happen.  Doris is what the staff and I like to call Sanity Savers.  They're little things that make you laugh, smile or make way for an inside joke.  Our job is great, but it's also very challenging and these little guys help out on those tough days.

Introduction

Hi.  My name is Katie and I teach at a day program for adults with special needs.  Challenging, you say?  Yes, it can be.  But it can also be as equally rewarding.  Our goal is to teach as many daily living skills as possible, among other things. However, they have taught me just as important life lessons.

Some of the things that come out of their mouths just can't be written.  My attempt here is to enlighten the world to special education because let's face it.  There isn't a whole lot of knowledge out there.

All names will be change and no pictures of faces will be posted due to HIPPA laws, but I will do my best to keep these stories intact.  Thanks for reading.
